VocabAhead~Review

image

VocabAhead is a helpful book teaching hundreds of vocabulary words to prepare students for taking the SAT.image

The most unique feature about this book is that when you purchase the book you are also getting access to FREE videos and MP3’s to further help in the learning process.

Be forewarned, it took a long time to download the videos and MP3’s-34 minutes to be exact! And that’s with high speed cable internet! Still it was worth it!

In my desire to keep things independent for my high schoolers, yet still be involved and supportive, I found a creative way to make this book fit with our learning goals. First I downloaded all of the Videos and MP3s onto my lap top. Then I took the little flash drives that my children have and added the first 10 word videos from the book, onto their flash drives. Now they are able to take those flash drives to their own PC’s and learn the vocabulary words without having to share the book. I gave them a week to learn the words with a quiz (provided in the book) given to them on Friday. This works perfectly in getting the words in front of them but letting them use their own time management to learn the words, without tracking down the book. When they finish with the first set of 10 words, then I delete them all from their zip drive and add another 10 words. Easy, independent, effective!

The only problem I had with doing this was that the videos and MP3’s downloaded in alphabetical order, not in the order they appear in the book. Since I wanted to go over the first section of 10 words with my high schoolers, it was a little more time-consuming looking through the big list of videos to find the ones I wanted each week-not terrible, but not terribly helpful either.

On the VocabAhead website you can subscribe to the Word of the Day and see videos and learn more than you ever thought possible about words and their definitions! They not only sell a book, but also a DVD version.

The DVD is $24.95 and can be purchased from Amazon.

The Book with free downloads can also be purchased from Amazon for $12.95.

Or you can just play around on their website and get access to hundreds of words and videos at your own convenience.
